Catering

At Bishop Young Academy, we recognise the important connection between a healthy diet and a student’s ability to learn effectively. To reflect this, we have the following aims –

  • To ensure nutrition and a healthy diet has a prominent place in school life
  • To offer healthy food and drink choices at all appropriate opportunities
  • To increase student knowledge of different food types in the context of a balanced diet
  • To ensure that food provision in the school reflects the ethical and medical requirements of staff and students (religious, ethical, vegetarian, medical and allergic needs)

Catering at Bishop Young is provided by Caterlink, who prepare, cook and serve from our in-school kitchen.

Menus

Caterlink provide a menu that is packed full of choice, with two main meal options, plus handheld bites, “bowled over” rice, pasta and noodle bowls, a selection of baguettes, jacket potatoes and soup available every lunchtime. Before school and during morning break, students can also purchase a range of hot and cold breakfast items, such as porridge, fruit pots, bacon rolls or simple buttered toast.

There are also a range of meal deals available, where students can get a main and either a pudding or drink for £2.55.

School compliant drinks are available to buy, there is also a water cooler in the main hall; we recommend students have a water bottle in school at all times.

Food Allergies and Dietary Requirements

Cater link are committed to providing suitable meals for all students. Please ensure that your child's allergy or dietary requirements have been registered at the school office.

If you have any questions about menus or queries relating to your child’s dietary requirements, please speak to the School Office.

Break and Lunch Times

Food is available at the following times:

  • Breakfast Club runs from 8:05 am - 8:20 am
  • Morning Break from 10:55 am - 11:15 am
  • Lunch Break from 1:15 pm - 1:45 pm

Bishop Young is a very busy school with very busy break times, and it can be quite daunting to students coming from smaller primary schools. The main difference is the range of choice available. This information will let students know what is available, when and where, so we can provide the best service possible. Most of this information will be given out to new students on transition day. Please be aware that the transition day menu will not be the same as our regular offers.

Payments

At Bishop Young we operate a cashless system, so that when money has been paid into your account (either online through ParentPay or by cash using PayPoint). Please ensure your child has enough credit on their card to purchase food each day.

Students are set with a daily spending limit on their card to prevent them spending all their money in one day. This limit is currently £9.99 per day however this can be changed at your request. Please contact the school office if you wish to change your limit.

Parents/carers are requested to speak to their children to ensure they do not overspend on their card. We frequently have students spending too much at morning break, who then do not have enough money to buy a lunch.

Free School Meals

If your child receives Free School Meals, they will have £2.55 added to their account daily. This can be used on their choice of food and drink, or they can purchase a meal deal (we will top up the extra 10p needed).
