Mel Carlin
Assistant Principal
Teaching & Learning

Miss Carlin is incredibly proud of her working-class roots and is passionate about ensuring that young people deserve the highest quality of educational provision, no matter what their postcode. She graduated from the University of Sheffield to take up her first teaching post as a History teacher at St. Mary's, Menston; one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country. Quickly, she was given the opportunity to become the History Lead Practitioner for Leeds Learning Partnership in 2010 and qualified as a History Advanced Skills Teacher in 2012. Through this post, she was responsible for the delivery of city-wide training for subject leaders.

Alongside this, she offered successful outreach work in several inner-city schools, helping to drive up standards and outcomes in History teaching. In 2013, she was appointed as History subject leader and Achievement Director for Humanities during which time the school and faculty was recognised as Ofsted Outstanding. Her passion for teaching and learning led her to take up the post of Lead Practitioner as part of the Abbey MAT in 2016, where she led outreach support for secondary schools in the MAT and beyond.  Miss. Carlin was then appointed as Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at Bishop Young Academy in 2017. She is incredibly excited to contribute to Bishop Young’s journey to ensure that the academy is recognised as an example of excellence with a unique, innovative and vibrant learning community.
