National research, and our own school academic results, have proven that attendance is a critical part of student success. By attending all day, every day, all the way through their school career, students are able to thrive both personally and academically. At Bishop Young we regard attendance as absolutely fundamental to your child’s success and we need your support to communicate this message to your child.
In 2019, the 30 highest achieving students in Yr11 all had attendance above 96%. Contrastingly, the students with the lowest performance were all persistent absentee students with attendance below 90%.
The Department for Education has recently published data showing that 17 days of absence within one year – attendance at roughly 93% - results in a full grade of underachievement in Year 11. Therefore, students with attendance below 93% can expect to underachieve in their GCSEs by a full grade no matter how hard they work to catch up. The message is clear: students have to be in school to reach their full potential.
Once a student falls below 90% attendance, the rate of underachievement grows more severe. Research completed in 2018 indicated that students with attendance below 85% are 50% more likely to fail to meet the entry requirements for college and post 16 courses. Data published in 2016 showed that 2/3 students who failed to progress into education, employment or training between the ages of 16-21 had attendance below 90%.
At Bishop Young, we are passionate about student success and therefore for us, it is crucial that all of our students are here all day, every day, all the way through their school career.
